Kensington Historical Society

THE KENSINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY (KHS) was founded in June 1977 to safeguard and promote the heritage of the Town of Kensington. The Society furthers this mission by preserving a record of Kensington’s cultural, social, economic, political, and architectural history; by promoting the preservation, protection, and restoration of district, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that reflect the history of the Town and the lives of its residents; and by promoting the preservation of open space within the community for historic, recreation, and scenic purposes. The Society maintains a library of publications, newspaper clippings and photographs, available by appointment. Our library is on the ground level of the Town Hall and is currently open Friday mornings 9 to 12.

Information provided by residents, as well as donations and inquiries are appreciated. The Society also presents educational programs, community concerts, hosts semi-annual social events, and publishes a quarterly newsletter and yearly calendar which honors some feature of historic Kensington. Through the efforts of the Kensington Historical Society, a major portion of the Historic District of Kensington was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1980). The entire District is also included on the Montgomery County Master Plan for Historic Places (which lists over 3,500 sites in the county). The Kensington Historic District is protected by the County’s 1979 Ordinance for Historic Preservation, Chapter 24A and the Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission. For more information about the Society, or to attend a meeting listed on the monthly calendar of the Town of Kensington, check out the web site: www.TOK.MD.gov and also the KHS site: www.kensingtonhistory.org.
